Our Heritage

OUR HERITAGE

We at Harrod Brothers have been serving Central Kentucky for more than sixty-five years with caring service, personal attention and a heritage that’s continued for four generations of funeral professionals.

Cecil S. Harrod, founder, purchased our Washington Street location in 1940.  Along with his two sons, Leon N. Harrod and William “Billy” W. Harrod that served friends and families throughout Franklin and surrounding counties  for over six decades.

The early sixties left our family without the founder of the Funeral Home. The Funeral Home continued to serve the community under the guidance of Leon and Billy along with their mother Elizabeth Wells Harrod. The early and mid sixties were found to be a devastating era for the Harrod Family. In1964, the partnership lost one of the original brothers, William W. Harrod and in 1968, Elizabeth Wells Harrod.

Mr. Leon N. Harrod continued to serve as the owner. His dedication to the community was unstoppable. His professional service involved being President of the State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers and his community as, Franklin County Coroner, Sheriff and Commonwealth Detective, with the Commonwealth Attorneys Office, his community came first.

In the early sixties the company was joined by, Michael L. Harrod. Mike served as Manager until the death of his father in 1976, Leon N. Harrod. The Funeral Home continued as a partnership with Mike’s mother, Doris Johnson Harrod, from 1976 to 2005. Many wonderful changes took place during this thirty year period, in 1980 the purchase of the (Adams-Cassity Funeral Home), now Harrod Brothers Funeral Home LLC, in Stamping Ground, Kentucky. Mikes’ nephew, Lawrence Scott Hoover, Manager/Director, who actively serves the company as one of the fourth generation funeral practitioners; our reception in this community has been heartwarming.

Mike has tried to follow the tradition of his family for the past forty-five years; under his direction the company has grown to be considered as one of the most respected Funeral Service Providers in Central Kentucky and was selected by invitation, memberships in two prestigious organizations known to the funeral service industry, The International Order Of The Golden Rule “Service measured not by gold but by, the Golden Rule” and Selected Independent Funeral Homes, formerly; The National Selected Morticians. Mike has served as a Director for the Kentucky Funeral Directors Association, many civic organization boards and as Coroner of Franklin County for thirty-six years.

With the loss of Mike’s mother, Doris Johnson Harrod in May of 2005, the funeral home has undergone even more changes. Harrod Brothers Funeral Home LLC, was established in June of 2005 with Michael L. Harrod as President and Owner.

Mike’s son, William C. Harrod, from 1990 to June 2005, served as Manager of the Frankfort firm. Will has been an inspiring addition to the company; he is very active in the community.  He is involved in functions such as serving on the Hospice of the Bluegrass advisory board, the Kentucky Funeral Directors Association, Downtown Frankfort Inc. Board, Chamber of Commerce, was a deputy Coroner for 4 years and has served as a deputy sheriff and death investigations officer for the Franklin County Sheriffs Office since 1997. Will has stayed in touch with the new innovations involving the Funeral Industry. He currently serves as Vice-President and Manager of the Company.

Being a family owned company sets us apart. A point of interest; in today’s corporate control mindset, many funeral homes have local family names, but they’re actually owned/operated by some large corporation in a faraway city or country.

For so many years, families have placed their trust in us because of our caring commitment to our profession. We feel privileged to serve your family and hope the guidance we provide equals or exceeds your expectations. We are dedicated and committed to offering you the highest level of professional integrity. As Mike has said for so many years, “Were Here Because Of You, Our Friends And Neighbors” Harrod Brothers is a community built funeral home, “We Are Just The Caretakers.”
